How the tournament works
- Group stage. 12 groups of 4 teams, three rounds, 72 matches. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1.
- Who goes through. The top two of every group and the 8 best third-placed teams, 32 in all.
- Knockout stage. Round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, the third-place match and the final. A draw at full time goes to extra time, 48 moves at a time, until someone leads.
- The groups follow the real draw of the 2026 tournament. Each team’s strength in the game is set by a rating: favourites play stronger.
- Stats and calendar. Group tables, the knockout bracket, a calendar of all 104 matches and a summary of each, with how the score went.
How long a match lasts
The format is chosen when the championship starts and applies to every match:
Express
240 moves
Shorter matches; more of them are decided at the whistle.
Extended
360 moves
Longer matches; the team that was ahead wins more often.
Full
240–720 moves
After move 240 the match goes on until the leader’s advantage is protected.
At the limit, whoever leads wins. A level score is a draw in the group stage and goes to extra time in the knockout stage.
